M5214 disk enclosure in EVA6100?

Is it possible to use old M5214 disk enclosures with EVA6100? Obviously the EMU-s and I/O modules must be replaced, but are the current modules compatible with the M5214 enclosures?

Hi,

Yes. If you read the Q&A for the new EVAs here:

http://h18006.www1.hp.com/products/storageworks/eva/qa.html#19

it indicates that you should be able to use the old shelves, as long as you replace the I/O modules and EMUs as you said.

Cheers,

Unfortunately the referred Q&A does not specify the enclosure models. Most current EVA5K-s use M5314 enclosures and I'm sure these are compatible with new M5314C EMU's and I/O modules. But what about the old M5214? I have not been able to find a clear answer in any documentation.

Hi,

Take a look at this doc:

http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bc/docs/support/SupportManual/c01122136/c01122136.pdf

This doesn't mention specific drive enclosures, so I'd say it's safe to assume that you can just swap out the I/O modules and EMUs in a M5214 enclosure.

Re: M5214 disk enclosure in EVA6100?

I have read all the docs that can be found.
Yes, one can assume that it should work, but as one of my ex-colleagues always liked to say: "don't assume, you'll just make an ass out of u and me"... ;)

Does anyone have actual experience with using a new M5314C module with M5214 enclosure or can point me to a document that shows this as supported option?

Re: M5214 disk enclosure in EVA6100?

I just finished working on a project where we upgraded an EVA5K to an EVA8100 and all we changed on the drive shelves were the EMU's and I/O Modules. There was one other little difficulty. The new EVA8100 switches have less clearance around the SFP's so all the cables to all the shelves had to be replaced with cables that had a smaller profile connector for the SFP's.

But as for your question, yes I am sure you can use the 5214 disk enclosures with the EVA6100 as long as you replace the EMU and I/O modules.

Once it's in production it's all bugs after that.
