MSA1500 - spare drive

Can you assign a 146GB drive as a spare for an array containing 72.8GB drives?

Yes that is OK.

In a manual it says:
A spare must be greater than or equal to any drive that it is intended to replace

I figured as much, but wanted to confirm with others in the know.. I couldn't find any reference to drive sizes in the manuals I have, guess I need to dig a bit deeper!
