MSA30 and 6404 Speed issue

We currently have two MSA30 DB connected to a 6404 on a DL585. The 6404 has the 2.62 firmware and the driver is the 5.16.0.64.
both MSA30's are fully populated with 14 15k u320 drives.

The Operating system is WIN2003 64bit.
All updates have been applied.

Here is things I have checked.
Cables are properly connected.
All drives are 15k U320.
6404 is U320 capiable I think.
One MSA30 is connected to the 6402 part of the controller and the other MSA30 is connected to the EM.
Both MSA 30 are DB and have both cables connected.
HP insight shows no problems.

Here is the Problem:

I have tested both MSA30's are am getting only 124 MB average read. with a max burst of 181MB. According to most references that I have come accross it should be atleast 320MB.

Please Help me resolve this problem.

Thanks,

Scott

Re: MSA30 and 6404 Speed issue

Scott,

What is a layout of your logical drive(s)? I mean what RAID levels & how do they span accross your hard drives / shelves?

Rgds.

Scott, what application are you using for those results.

Re: MSA30 and 6404 Speed issue

Both MSA 30 are Raid 0 and they contain SQl 05 Database files.

Re: MSA30 and 6404 Speed issue

The aps ive use to bech mark this are IOmeter, and HDtach. I was going to try LTT. I'll use that right now.

What was your block size for your test?

Re: MSA30 and 6404 Speed issue

I was going to use LTT and the "Backup Pre test" with a read size of 512

Re: MSA30 and 6404 Speed issue

Also, if using IOMeter, try increasing your "# of Outstanding I/Os" on your test LUN. This setting is located on the Disk Targets tab.

Re: MSA30 and 6404 Speed issue

I just used Hp Library and tapetools and here are my results. I talked with a local HP guy and he said I really should use LTT so I am going to use that.

1024k read size 61MB/S
512k read size 61MB/S
256k read size 61MB/S
16k read size 61MB/s

Here are some interest facts that I noticed

The disk que was fairly constant at around 7.1

I find it strange that the exact same read size yielded the same performance.

Re: MSA30 and 6404 Speed issue

One last test that I did using all four readers gave me 132MB/S. Which is far better than 61 but still much less than I would expect. But now that I mention that. What is a resonable MB/s max burst and max sustained that I should be looking for out of a MSA30 with my configuration? I would think that as everything is U320 and there are dual chanels and its on the HP U320 6404 card and a HP 585 with nothing else running. I should at the very least see around 300MB/S. And if there are dual channels it should be even higher as it is a DB. Please Correct me if I am wrong. The only thing about all of this that I have not verified is if the number 1 and number 2 PCI slots are capiable of absorbing this bandwidth. I do know that most PCIX slots should be able to should be able to. From what I can remember PCI X is around 8GB/S.
