Migrate SmartArray 5304 -> 6404

Hi

I have the situation: see attached image. I want to to connect the MSA 30 to my new SmartArray 6404 controller, which is installed in my newly arrived Proliant DL580 G3 machine. How do I migrate the MSA 30 enclosure to the new 6404 controller?

Re: Migrate SmartArray 5304 -> 6404

In addition to my previous post:
What happens if just take the MSA 30, disconnect it from the SA 5304 controller and connect it to the SA 6404 controller, say, to the ports A1 and A2?

Re: Migrate SmartArray 5304 -> 6404

If on MSA resides only data (no application binanaries), you can just plug enclosure to new array controller and all data will be visible on new server.

...and you will probably need to assign some drive letters as Windows (assuming your using Windows) sometimes does not assign drive letters to drives that are already initialized/formatted (containing data).

Re: Migrate SmartArray 5304 -> 6404

But doesn't the document here
ftp://ftp.compaq.com/pub/products/servers/proliantstorage/arraycontrollers/sa5300-sa6400-migration.pdf
imply that you first need to migrate the drives from ports 3 and 4 to the ports 1 and 2 on the older SmartArray 5304?

Re: Migrate SmartArray 5304 -> 6404

Oskar,
Attached document describes situations when on SA5304 controller was created logical drive spanning drives from two or more enclosures. Your logical drives (as you attached) resides on one SCSI channel each. And in your situation internal drives can be connected to port 1 or port2 only.
As I post before, you can simply connect your MSA to new controller.

Re: Migrate SmartArray 5304 -> 6404

But if I then want to return back to the old configuration (as seen on the attached image), is it just as easy as attaching the cables back to the SA 5304 controller?

Thanks again,

Re: Migrate SmartArray 5304 -> 6404

Yes, all configurations data (array/logical disks, etc) are kept on disks.
