Migrating from VA7400 to EVA: direct LUN copy ?

Hi.

We have planned to migrate data from a VA7400 to a EVA disk array.

Both disk arrays will be in the same zone of FC switch (i.e., they will be able to contact face to face)

Is it possible to copy data contained from a VA7400 LUN to an EVA LUN without using intermediate HP-UX host ?

Is this feature provided by an additional sofware (and its license) ?

I understand you have HPUX Servers.

Do it online with mirror/UX

lvextend to EVA
lvreduce from VA

In this case you can do it without any downtime

CAS,

You can probably do what your thinking via a SAN Appliance of sorts that can migrate arrays and their LUNS without involving the hosts.

I forgot the name of one vendor I was eyeing for a project a couple of months back..

I will post it once I have it...

Here's one:

I am sure there are other Fabric based Appliances out there too..

But I am pretty sure it will require downtime of your SAN to instal and configure...

Why can't you just use host based LUN migration tricks using LVM or VxVM?

Re: Migrating from VA7400 to EVA: direct LUN copy ?

I would use the pvmove feature of LVM.

Add a LUN from the EVA to the volume group

Example: new LUN is c15t2d1 and VA LUN is C10t3d2

once you do the vgextend to add /dev/dsk/c15t2d1 you can tell LVM to move all the extents from the old LUN (va) to the new LUN (eva)

pvmove /dev/dsk/C10t3d2 /dev/dsk/c15t2d1

once all the extents are moved, you can remove the va LUN from the VG using the vgreduce command.

This can be done online with the VG up and running.
