Migrating logical drive: Proliant DL380 G3, Smart Array 642

Setup: Proliant DL380 G3
Smart Array 642
6 x 36 GB SCSI 320 Hot swap HDDs
External HP Ultrium 230e Tape drive on SCSI U320 interface card in slot 1.
Veritas Backup Exec (evaluation version) installed on this machine.

Three of these disks drives are currently employed in a RAID 0 array, with less than 30 GB of data on them. We have just purchased three new disks to change the role of this machine on the network, so the other three are currently empty and not involved in any array. I want to move the data on these three disks to a RAID 0+1 array on two disks.

My current plan is to:
1) Setup the other three disks in a RAID 5 array
2) Make a ghost of this drive onto this new array
3) Delete the original array and reconfigure it to be two disks as a RAID 0+1 (36 GB ish)
4) Restore from the ghost onto this new RAID 0+1 array
5) Add the now spare drive to the RAID 5 array.

What are the risks involved in this, and my recovery options regarding those. Is there a better (quicker) way of doing it given this configuration? I know that it is not possible to directly shrink arrays, and am not sure of the technicalities involved in moving a RAID 0 to a RAID 0+1 array.

Thank you in advance.

Re: Migrating logical drive: Proliant DL380 G3, Smart Array 642

Andy,

I was wondering how this upgrade turned out. I'm especially interested in how Ghost worked with the Smart Array 642. I have a possable upgrade that I wanted to attempt using Ghost with the same controller.

Please let me know!
