Oracle on EVA4000 on Solaris , and BC

Hi all ,

I'd really appreciate your help on this one please .

- Can you safely take a snapshot or a snapclone using BC , of a vdisk on EV4K presented to a solaris 10 host running oracle 9i or 10g ? ie while the database is online and running ? without shuting down the database and unmounting the presented disk ?

- is there any best practices or critical conditions to be checked especially for the EVA4000 on with Solaris 9 , 10 ? , I mean in addition to the basic eva solaris connectivity requirements being met ?

Snapshot yes.

While the database is runing presents problems.

1) The snapshot will be fuzzy and may not be usable. If you shut down the database, take the snapshot and then bring it back up, this will work.

2) Note that oracle 9i can't read or mount data that has been converted to 10g so what data can be presented to what database is limited by this factor.

Best Practices:
1) Do realistic backup/restore failure tests.
2) Keep the EVA firmware and management software up to date.
3) Keep the OS(Solaris) up to date on patches, however Solaris handles that.

Yes you can.. and it's fully documented and your DBA's should know about it.

Steps:

1.) Place DB in hotbackup mode (DB must have already been in ARCHIVELOG mode)

2.) Use EVA CV (either GUI or CVLI) to create a "snapclone"

3.) Take DB our of hotbackup mode.

All the above should happen in a matter of a few seconds to no more than a few minutes depending on how large or how many your DB Table spaces.

AND there should be no disruption to your DB operations --- all will appear normal and online.

Then the snapclone can be mounted on the same server (using diff mount points) or on a different server.

actually this is my point , this fuzzy status that is concluded , should it always be a completely disfunctional database on worst cases ? I know this might be more of an oracle question than an HP one ;-) , but there is no considerations or recommendations from HP EVA side to be taken on Oracle inorder to yield a functional database on that snapshot or snapclone , without the need to shutdown the database once taking it everytime ?

so that is what's supposed to be done , otherwise , we always end up with a corrupted system.dbf file or so ?

we've actually not yet tested that , as we are still 9i , and we need to upgrade to 10g inorder to try the command which allows you to put the whole database , not just table spaces , into hot abckup mode . but I allready fount an oracle document confirming what you said Nelson .
