Proliant DL580: add disk to increase drive space

Hi, I have a Proliant DL580 with three 18.2GB disks on one ~34GB logical drive at RAID 5 (Compaq Smart Array Controller) and I am wondering if it possible to increase the drive array by one drive (I have an open drive bay) and get additional drive space in the logical drive.

I've seen mixed reports on this--is it as simple as plugging in the new drive and running the Smart Array configuration program? Thanks!

I suppose I should add that I am running Windows NT Server 4.0. Thanks.

William, I've seen it done before thru the Array Configuration Utility. Which array controller are you using?

Thank you for your reply Michael, the controller states itself as:

Integrated SmartArray Controller v 1.42.

Thanks!

Hi William;

As long as you used the integrated array controller to create your array in the first place, you will be able to expand the array across an additional drive.

Use the Array Configuration Utility from SmartStart or Windows to expand the array.
