RAID Controller, SCSI Drive Cage and OS Compatability

I'm trying to plan ahead for a possible shift to Server 2003 but currently have Smart Array 3200 controller which I believe is not supported.

I've seen a number of other controllers within my budget that I think are supported but so far have not found one that will definately work with my Wide Ultra2/Ultra 3 SCSI Drive Cage (382157-B21).

Can anyone advise as to which controllers support my drive cage and whether or not they are supported by Server 2003.

Thanks.

Re: RAID Controller, SCSI Drive Cage and OS Compatability

The 3200 is supported under Windows 2003. Here is the driver you need to use:
http://h18007.www1.hp.com/support/files/storage/us/download/17322.html

Be sure you update the bios to version 4.50:

You need diskette #1

Are you installing this in a ProLiant 5500?

If so, be sure to update the system bios as well.
Enjoy!

Re: RAID Controller, SCSI Drive Cage and OS Compatability

Thanks John those links look very promising.

It is a Proliant 5500 that I'm installing this in (have you been peeking?) so I'll be sure to check out the last advice as well.

I was looking at other alternatives because of the Server 2003 issue and while I was at it was looking to add Ultra3 support as I've a couple of Ultra3 drives.

That's when I first encountered the cage compatability issue with a 431 I saw advertised.

Any other advice gratefuly received but otherwise thanks a lot for the help so far.

Re: RAID Controller, SCSI Drive Cage and OS Compatability

Yes... I was peeking. You posted the part number for the cage and I tracked it to the server.
The biggest issue with the Ultra2 vs. Ultra3 will be in the cable that is used to go from the controller to the cage. If you use a "flat ribbon" cable then you will get Ultra2 from it. If you use the "twisted pair round" cable then you can get Ultra3.

There is an Option Part Kit (166390-B21)available but I am not 100% sure that it can be used in the 5500; it may be short. If you get these SCSI cables, you can run the cage at Ultra3.
Enjoy!

Re: RAID Controller, SCSI Drive Cage and OS Compatability

You should know the SmartArray 3200 will only run Ultra2.

You need a 5300 series controller to run Ultra3.
Enjoy!

Re: RAID Controller, SCSI Drive Cage and OS Compatability

Yes, I knew the 3200 didn't support Ultra3 but until the Server 2003 support issue came up I was prepared to live with it.

I'm fairly sure the 431 supports Ultra3 - the 5300 series is at the limit of my budget given everything else we are spending on at the moment - but my Drive Cage isn't listed as supported on the 431's QuickSpecs sheet.

Any other recommendations gratefuly received.

Thanks.

Re: RAID Controller, SCSI Drive Cage and OS Compatability

Is your PL5500 a duplex or simplex cage? (does it have two SCSI cables or one SCSI cable coming from the I/O cage?

If you have a simplex cage, I do not see a problem with the 431 controller in this server. If you are duplexing, the 431 would be a problem with only "ONE" SCSI internal channel. If you do have a duplex cage, you could "duplex" the controllers (i.e., two 431 controllers)

The 431 controller is certified in all models of the 5500.
Enjoy!

Re: RAID Controller, SCSI Drive Cage and OS Compatability

Grrr... never mind... it says it is a simplex cage. One 431 controller will have no troubles with this.
Enjoy!
