Raid array failure - Notification

We have some K series servers running HP-UX 10.20 with some raid arrays connected.

The raid arrays are model numbers 005041693 and A3516A

Is there a way of detecting a disk (or raid) failure on these systems?

Re: Raid array failure - Notification

The AutoRAID disk monitor (armmon) from EMS should do this job.

Re: Raid array failure - Notification

Hi,

you can use the arraylog command to retrieve possible error conditions from the autoraid:
arraylog -e
displays the contents of the array controller event log
array -d
displays the contents of the log for the disk in
should be A1..12 or B1..12
For further information see man arraylog.
To retrieve use:
arraydsp -i

Re: Raid array failure - Notification

One of the arrays in question is a DG Clarion - HP Model A3389A. It does not respond to the arraydsp request. It says that the ARMServer is not running.

Are these commands appropriate for this array? Should we be running the ARMServer?

BTW we have not installed EMS to these systems but we plan to. There are change management issues such that it may be some time before we can install EMS to all of our porduction systems.

Re: Raid array failure - Notification

ARMServer is created for A3700A, HP AutoRAID so array... commands are not appropriate for your array.

If HPUX detects any failures for the array, It reports a message on the console but i use this a lot.

If HARAYMON is installed which monitors units within the disk array, you can make HARAYMON to send e-mail messages to people placed in the file /usr/sbin/diag/haraymon.dest when any failures are detectd.

An example of haraymon.dest is below.

--------------------------------------
Inside of haraymon.dest

--------------------------------------
Here is another thing which is called haraymon.sig.

/usr/sbin/diag/haraymon.sig is a text file which enables you to attach text to messges sent by HARAYMON.
I usually put system name, location there to identify which array of the system has a problem.

Please notice that HARAYMON appears as an excutable file in the /usr/sbin/diag on HPUX 10.X and both can created by system administrator with any editor on the system.

The High-Availability Disk Array monitor (ha_disk_array) from EMS should do this job. If you want to learn more about EMS follow this link
