Replacing RAID controller without data loss

Hi all, I need to replace an existing RAID SmartArry 641 controller (hosting functioning RAID 1 & RAID 5 arrays) with a new SmartArray 6402 controller for performance reasons (need the write cache to improve db performance).

I can't conceptualise how I can change the card without data loss since the array configuration is a property of the controller (which I'm replacing).

Only option I can come up with is to image all server partitions, install & configure arrays on new card to match old & image back down.

Any improvements on this? Anyone out there have experience in something like this?

Hello Rafael,

1.Install 6402 controller in the server.
2.Power on and load device drivers for 6402 if need be.
3.Power down,disconnect cable from 641 controller and connect to 6402 controller.
4.Power on the server and see if this is what you wanted.

I believe the array information is stored on the disks themselves, in the RIS partition.

Thanks all - both right, points splint & submitted.
Solution is to install the SmartArray drivers & then replace old controller with new. Array info is indeed on the disks themselves.
