Replacing faulty MSA1000

G'Day!

We have an MSA1000 connected to 2 x MSA30's (42 drives in total).  This is all attached to an RP8420.

We currently have 2 faulty drives in the MSA1000 that keep dropping in and out, and the feelings are the backplane on the 1000 is faulty.  We are expecting a replacement MSA1000.  My question is:

Is it simply a case of removing the 14 drives and putting them in the new MSA1000 (I doubt it!) and all my LVM will be intact?  Is there any way of preserving all the work I have done?

Or does one have to export all the VG's, rmsf any files hanging around, delete the LUN's on the MSA1000, and create everythig from scratch again?

Regards

Re: Replacing faulty MSA1000

I'm not sure if the chassis carries the WWn of the array (like the P2000 does), so you probabyl need to adjust your WWN zoning. The disks and the controllers remain, so your logical drives remain too. Make sure to connect all the cables to the same ports.

Hope this helps!

As far as I am aware, the controller is attached to the MSA1000, so the new MSA1000 will come with it's own controller, that'll have no knowledge of the LUN configuration.

With regards to the zoning, this goes beyond my realms of storage related knowledge.

I think the only way for me to proceed is to:

unmount everything

export the VG's

delete all th enits from the MSA CLI

and start all over again once replaced.

Re: Replacing faulty MSA1000

IIRC if you need a new backplane you get an empty chassis including backplane, so you need to transfer fans, power supplies, disks and controllers. The controllers and configuration will remain this way, but maybe the device has a new WWN now.

Hope this helps!

Re: Replacing faulty MSA1000

generaly the configuration information for the storage is kept in the disk drive themselves, you will have all your data back but wwid could be changed due to the new controller.

however,

i will collect the lun mapping info prior to the activity.

i would also ensure a full data backup just incase...

Re: Replacing faulty MSA1000

I think I'll stick to my plan, I have secured 2 full backups as well.

THanks
