SA 6404 - Accelerator Disabled

Have a problem with a new SA6404/256Mb with 14 drives in an MSA30.

The firmware version is: 2.26

The controller is marked "Degraded" with the following error:

Status: Temp Disabled
Battery Status: Failed
Serial Number: P67570BDAPQFOX
Read Errors: 0
Total Memory: 196608 KB
Write Errors: 0
Read Cache: 50%
Error Code: Low Battery
Write Cache: 50%
Bad Data: None

First I thought it needed some time to recharge but its been like that for a week now.

This is a critical server for us and would like some advise what to do.

Thx, Joel

Re: SA 6404 - Accelerator Disabled

If the batteries are showing failed and after 36 hours have not charged, they are likely not going to do so. You should contact HP and have them warranty replace the battery module.
Enjoy!

Re: SA 6404 - Accelerator Disabled

Joel:

There may be someting VERY wrong with bios version 2.26. The bios seems to "discharge" or at least claim to dischage the betteries and therefore diable the cache.
Enjoy!

Re: SA 6404 - Accelerator Disabled

I just got off the phone with HP:

There is a serious flaw in the Smart Array 6400 Online ROM Flash Component for Linux.

If you load it from the "Online version" the batteries will be DISCHAGED or will be "claimed" as discharged and therefore your cache will be diabled!

DO NOT USE THE ONLINE VERSION.

Use the offline version only!

I am going to re-flash the controller we tested on here and I will post back what I find.
Enjoy!

Re: SA 6404 - Accelerator Disabled

Use a SmartStart CD (like version 6.4) and do a bios update. You will need to select custom and allow overwrite to re-flash the controller with 2.26 offline version.
http://h18023.www1.hp.com/support/files/Storage/us/download/21330.html

I am going to check the server in a few hours to see if the batteries are still discharged.

I'll post back in a few...
Enjoy!

Re: SA 6404 - Accelerator Disabled

Joel:

I will be checking the status in the morning on the controller we tested here to see if that resolved it? If not, I am going to roll back to 1.92 and I will let you know what I find.

Has HP said anyting to you?
Enjoy!

Re: SA 6404 - Accelerator Disabled

They said to use the offline-version, but seemed to recognize the problem.
Do you also have the "downshift"-error?

"SCSI bus fault occurred on Storage Box box 0, , Port 0 of
Array Controller in slot 2.
This may result in a "downshift" in transfer rate for one or more hard drives on the bus. "

Gonna wait for your results before I do anything more.

Re: SA 6404 - Accelerator Disabled

Joel:

I checked on the controller we updated this morning and the batteries are charged! (it fully charged overnight).
Yesterday, I used SmartStart 6.40 and did the off-line update and forced the overwrite of the bios to use 2.26.
We were hoping for better I/O performance from the controller and still have not seen it. So, three bios, any number of drivers later and still the I/O load numbers are lacking.

At least the hardware is not runing degraded mode anymore.
Enjoy!
