Seeking guidance/clarificiation on the use of dynamic disks

Hello,

I'm part of a team that supports Windows servers within a large corporate network. We use a lot of Proliant servers.

Recently, some questions have arisen about dynamic disks. In particular, we have received guidance from HP's support staff that dynamic disks should not be used. However, we have not received a clarification on the reason for this. The call center agents I've spoken to have repeated that guidance but did not elaborate when I pressed for details.

Internally, we have adopted a policy of avoiding dynamic disks unless they're absolutely necessary. So this question is largely moot. But I guess I have an intellectual curiosity about it.

Can anyone provide a reason(s) why dynamic disks should not be used?

Hi,

Dynamic disks already have their own version of RAID so if you are using SAN LUN's they are already managed by your storage RAID controllers.

This is the main reason many storage array manufacturers do not recommend using Dynamic Disks on top of RAID.
