Server hangs then rebuilds mirror on reboot

We have a client with the same architecture on 2 different servers, one a LH3000 the other a Proliant. Both have mirrored sets of 36GB 15K non-hot swap drives. They are both being used in a software mirroring environment. They both keep locking up and rebuilding the mirroring. He is blaming the hardware, but since they are soft mirrored, I would assume some sort of software problem. Any ideas or experiences?

Re: Server hangs then rebuilds mirror on reboot

E4,

Can he bring them up individually into the OS? That would prove hardware functionality. Remember on that LH3000 some of those that were 1ghz, the cage on the processor cage could come into contact with the heatsink and cause the server to lock or reboot so verify that isn't an issue.

Re: Server hangs then rebuilds mirror on reboot

yes, they can boot up with either drive in the mirroring after the array is broken. But with both instances, the servers keep rebooting and locking up. He did assume that it was the drives causing the problems, because upon restart the software mirror began a rebuild automatically. The LH3000 is a 1 GHz and He will check to make sure the heat sink is not coming in contact with any other metal in the box. But understand, the same symptom appears on another server that is a Proliant. This is why I assume this is a software or OS problem

Re: Server hangs then rebuilds mirror on reboot

Both servers are running Win2k Server with latest service pack installed. Both are using the OS Mirroring.

The lh3000 is only being used as a file server, primarilly for Mac clients. It is also running Veritas backup and backing up it's self and 1 remote server. Also utilizinf File Replication Services.

The Proliant is an 1800, this is being used only for posting shipping files to Fed EX. It generates files from an IBM AS/400 and sends them thru the internet to FedEx.
All unneeded services on both machines are not running.

Re: Server hangs then rebuilds mirror on reboot

Why not use the built in raid in the LH3000? software raid was never supported on the netserver lines and why use it if you have a hardware RAID controller?
