THP and BC on XP24K

Hi,
I am trying to BC from a Normal vol to a THP Vol but when I select the normal vol as P-Vol i do not get the option to select any THP V-Vols as S-VOL, I can however select THP V-Vol as Primary and Secondary. From reading the manual this should work, I am aware that BC from normal to THP VOL defeats the purpose of THP, this is acceptable as I'm just using BC as a means to migrate data to my XP array.
I would be interested to hear from anyone who uses BC with THP.

Thanks in advance.

Re: THP and BC on XP24K

Hi DJ

I have done quite a lot with ThP and BC in dev, test and prod environments.

The first two questions that spring to mind (apologies if Im telling you how to suck eggs....) -

1. Are the P-VOL (classic LDEV) and the S-VOL (ThP) exactly the same size. They must be exactly the same block count.

2. Are they both the same track geometry? I.e. is the classic LDEV (P-VOL) also OPEN-V.

You might also find the following HDP/ThP best practice and theory guide useful -

Hi Nigel,
Thanks for your reply. The block count was not the same on both devices. My mistake, I was aware that it should be. Full points!

Do you boot from THP V-Vols in either your Dev or your production systems?

Re: THP and BC on XP24K

Hi DJ,

Yes I have "done" boot from SAN using ThP volumes in dev and prod. However, Ive been a contractor for a while and move around a lot. So where Im working at the moment does not use ThP to boot from SAN.

Ive done it though and it works just fine. Like anything though it works better in some situations than in others and you need to know what you expect from it (e.g. performance, or space saving etc...)
