VA 101

OK I'm confused by the literature &
links on these VA beasties
*****
What's the difference between these two?
[one is FC maybe?]
VA7100 & VA7110
VA7400 & VA7410
*****
A VA7100 controller enclosure will take maximum of 15 x 73Gb Disc
What are the scaleability options once you've reached that point?

For example...
Can you add more VA7100's using link controllers?
If you can... is this the same architecturally as daisy-chaining?
Are these additional Disc enclosures really just DS2400's?
Can a VA7100 become a VA7400?
[I would suppose you change the array controllers & memory - right?]

Re: VA 101

Hi,

VA 7100 has one raid group, VA 7400 has two.

VA 7110 and VA 7410 are just newer versions of the same arrays.

See http://h18006.www1.hp.com/storage/arraysystems.html

It is not like DSxxxx , since in the VA you define LUNs (logical disks) of the size you want, and present it to the hosts.

You can also decide different raid levels in the VA.

Re: VA 101

Hi;

The 7x10 versions are not only newer, but have 2Gb Fibre back-ends.

The VA7110 also adds the ability to have DS2405 enclosures for expansion, where the VA7100 did not. With the VA7100, you needed to add more VA7100s to expand, and the controllers do NOT link together in any way. We typically stripe over LUNs from multiple VA7100's in that type of config.

A VA7100 cannot really be upgraded to a VA7400 or VA7410 - you can re-use the drives and controller cabinet, but you have to reformat the drives. (ie: backup and restore)

Cheers,

Vince

Re: VA 101

I would add a little:
VA7110 can have up to 2 addon DS2405 enclosures (45 disks in total); difference between VA7410 and VA7400 that VA7410 has more powerful processors and more memory, and it has 2 host ports on each controller (4 in total for both controllers) and 2 backend ports to connect DS2405 enclosures on each controller
