VA7100 --> autoraid or raid 5

Hi,

I am wondering what autoraid does. Does it auto-build any raid depend on what it senses the application is, e.g. database, or sth?

Then do we have to tell it what raid level (1 or 5) we want?

Thanks a lot,

Steven

Re: VA7100 --> autoraid or raid 5

AutoRAID automatically manages your RAID levels. It picks the RAID level based on your access patterns, as you mentioned.

Once in AutoRAID mode, you cannot tell it what RAID level to use.

AutoRAID makes the array very easy to take care of - there isn't much you can specify, so there isn't much to manage.

Good luck!

Re: VA7100 --> autoraid or raid 5

From an official source,

The Virtual Array 7100 can operate in either RAID 1+0 mode or AutoRAID mode, which eliminates the requirement for the system administrator to understand and configure RAID levels. AutoRAID dynamically adapts to the system's workload, optimizing performance and cost. Users will find configuration significantly easier than other array products, since RAID levels don't need to be configured or managed.
The VA7100 supports one redundancy group, and all drives belong to that group. Using Virtual Storage Array (VSA)technology, when configured in AutoRAID mode the array controller automatically selects RAID 1+0 (disk striping and mirroring) or RAID 5DP (RAID 5 Double Parity) depending on the usage patterns of the data.
RAID 5DP provides superior data redundancy by protecting against the simultaneous failure of two member
disks by using independent error correction schemes.

Hope this helps,

Re: VA7100 --> autoraid or raid 5

Thanks for the help!

Would that mean that we just select AutoRaid option and let VA7100 takes care of the rest?

But for the new L box internal drives, we do need to set it up as mirror manually. Would that be right?

Re: VA7100 --> autoraid or raid 5

Steven,

That is correct. I believe the default configuration of the VA7100 is Autoraid. If not, you can select it during the VFP (Virtual Front Panel) configuration or using the Command View SDM.

As for the internal disks, yes, you will need to manually mirror the disks. Be sure you order the correct level of OS which includes the MirrorDisk/UX product or order it as a separate line item.

Re: VA7100 --> autoraid or raid 5

The VA7100 ONLY operates in AutoRAID if The latest controller firmware is installed, HP15 is the version you need, also suggest you upgrade disk drive
firmware b4 putting data on this array.Suggest HP CE perform this firmware upgrade.
see HP Service note A6206A-06.
To upgrade to this version of firmware you must first install Command View SDM v1.04.

As per uspfoms the latest firmware only supports Autoraid.Have you tried by installing the latest firmware.

Thanks.
