VA7100 or VA7400

If I have a VA7100 with dual controllers, can I directly connect two separate HPUX systems to each controller. I do not want to include a switch or hub. Is this a valid topology. It's come to my attention that the VA7100 with dual contollers manages only 1 redundancy group, therefore, all requests from the second controller will be handled by the primary controller. I would suspect that this would be an issue.

Yes - no problem. No hub or switch required.

Hi,

You can use 2 servers connected to 2 controller of VA7100 as you know that VA7100 supports only 1 RG,that means only 1 controller will be active.
The server connected to secondary controller in return will be talking to the primary controller & possibly you will be facing performance issue.
Depending upone the usage of the server you can take a discission.
I would suggest you to go for a HUB or SWITCH.

Re: VA7100 or VA7400

Yes, it's true for the 7100, the secondary controller will pass the command to the primary. That operation takes about 50us. For all but benchmarking cases, this is too small to have an effect in real-world applications. Consider the fact that a disk access is, on average, 10,000us.

If you have the money... buy the switch. Else direct connect.
