VA7400 and Brocade help with configuration

HP came out the other day and installed a 7400 for me. I installed a Brocade switch as well (HP wasn't responsible for this install). They also installed Fibre Channel cards in our N Class servers. The tech directly patched on of the N classes to the 7400 controller and we could do an armdiscover and see that it was there. Now he is gone and I want to use the Brocade so that the other HP boxes can use this 7400. Can anyone help me with a starting point and where to look on how to configure both the 7400 and the Brocade so they can live together?

At this time I have the controller(s) for the 7400 going directly to the Brocade along with the other N Classes but when I go to to do an armdiscover or any other sdm commands, I get nothing. Where do I begin to make this 7400 "sharable"? I made sure that the brocade isn't zoning and it looks like it still has basic "out of the box" configuration. When I look at the ports in the brocade management program, I can see the HPs plugged in! It even has the Part numbers! However, still no communication.

I am obviously missing some basic info. Any would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Mike

You should have the brocade and va7400 manuls, right?

Do you have a lan connection into your brocade?

Re: VA7400 and Brocade help with configuration

I have all the manuals and I have read them. The HP books don't talk "directly" about how to get this equipment to work within a SAN environment and the Brocade books don't talk about how to get a drive array to work within its environment. I have all the pieces, just having a problem putting it together. Trust me...I am digging. Yes I have a LAN and now I have a SAN.

Re: VA7400 and Brocade help with configuration

At this point, I would suggest setting up the Brocade switch on the LAN, follow the instructions to assign to it an IP address and then access the switch with the web interface that is way more friendly than the command line. Then, make sure the switch has fabric login enabled and then play around with zoning the devices and the FC cards.
Good luck,

Mike,

Which Brocade switch do you have? The 2400 and 2800 are pretty darn intelligent and you shouldn't have to do much, if any, configuration to them.

I have the Silkworm 3800.

Re: VA7400 and Brocade help with configuration

Mike,

I'm not familiar with the 3800. I do, however, have a Brocade book "Building SANS With Brocade Fabric Switches" that I got for free from the Brocade website (sorry I don't remember the URL). The book suggests troubleshooting with the switchShow command. This is supposed to tell you whether the device is logically connected to the switch. If it is connected, it should show up as an Nx_Port and your next step is to see if the device is present in the Simple Name Server (SNS) using the nsShow command - or you can use the WEB TOOLS GUI.

Hope this helps. I'll see if I can find the URL for the free book offer (though that will take a week or so to get to you).

Darn, Brocade isn't giving away the book anymore. They're now giving away a "Portable SAN Solution Center CD". See:

Re: VA7400 and Brocade help with configuration

When I do a switchshow, the Nclases show up as FPorts and the 2 controllers for the VA show up as LPorts (public).
