VA7405 did not do 2nd rebuild

We had a VA7405 with a faulty disk yesterday.
After 14 hour the automatic rebuild was finished and the array was ready for us to remove the faulty drive.

We took out the drive, and inserted a replacement. The drive took 20 minutes to format from 512 byte blocks to 520 byte blocks as normal.

However, every time we have done this in the past the array would immediately start another rebuild after the drive format.
This time it did not do the second rebuild and the new drive seems idle where all the others are flashing activity.

There are more more error messages and no more orange lights. The array reports everything as good, including the new drive.

The array initially went into a state of "Optimising" but not in has gone into a state of "Balancing"

Several months ago we upgraded the firmware in the array from HP19 to HP22.
Does anyone know if the latest firmware does things differently?
Or am I suppose to get a second rebuild after inserting the drive with firmware HP22?

Should say:
There are no more error messages and no more orange lights. The array reports everything as good, including the new drive.

Re: VA7405 did not do 2nd rebuild

If the array has plenty of space everything is OK.

Are green lights a problem?
No.

The array will decide the time for "optimizing".

Don't worry - as long as "armdsp -a " doesn't show a warning.

Hope this helps!

Re: VA7405 did not do 2nd rebuild

After 2 days everything seems correct and normal again. The drive which was replace now has normal activity on it.

I am now convinced that the new firmware has changed what happens after a disk fails.

With the HP19 firmware the sequence was
Disk Fail
Rebuild (14 hours)
Replace Disk
Format Disk (20 minutes)
Rebuild (14 hours)

With the new HP22 fireware the sequence is
Disk Fail
Rebuild (14 hours)
Replace Disk
Format Disk (20 minutes)
Optimise (about 1 to 3 hours)
Balance and Optimise (about 12 hours)

The new firmware is better because the Rebuild really kills the performance of the array.
The activity of the Optimise and Balance has a lower priority and is not noticeable on performance.
