XP CHIP port identifier

Hi,

Ive just noticed something a little strange. One of our XP1024 CHIP ports is logging in to the fabirc (Brocade) and identifying itself in the name server differently to the other ports as follows -
Port 1A ----> [28]"HP OPEN-XP1024 2101"
Port 1B ----> [28]"HP DISK-SUBSYSTEM 2113"
Port 1C ----> [28]"HP DISK-SUBSYSTEM 2113"
Port 1D ----> [28]"HP DISK-SUBSYSTEM 2113"

The strange thing to me is that port 1A has logged in as different to the other three ports. The ports are all on the same 4 port (8 port pair) CHIP. All 4 ports in cluster 2 log in as the same, its just port 1A.

I havent had a chance to reset the switch port and force the CHIP port to PLOGI and see if it corrects itself. Im curious though could this mean that port 1A is running a different version of microcode to the other ports????

Also can anyone tell me what the 2101 and 2113 numbers mean? I do remember seeing this in some IBM documentation somewhere but cant remember.

Ive checked on the SVP and port 1A is not running different microcode to the other ports (it was always a LONG shot).

Will let you know if resetting the switch port fixes this niggling issue (not really an issue)

"HP DISK-SUBSYSTEM 2113" format resembles with the "device-type-scsi-options-list" parameter in FC HBA configuration.

device = HP
type = DISK-SUBSYSTEM
scsi-options-list = 2113

This format is retrieved by the switch name server by initial quering the connected devices. It maybe a case here that the switch port was earlier connect to FC HBA ( solaris host maybe ? ) but later connected to XP CHIP port. I am sure that "HP OPEN-XP1024 2101" won't be returned by XP CHIP (pair and when others are showing correct details ) when NS initial query is done on that port. It should have been user defined in some FC HBA configuration file earlier.

In order to make NS re-query the port, you need to reset the switch port so that correct description could re-retrived by it from XP CHIP.

As far as I can tell, the number 2101 or 2113 would indicate device characteristics, link status/speed and based on type of CHIP ( FC FICON etc. ). I don't see any chart of this number available on net, but you might want to call HP support and get it.

this can happen due the lack of luns behind a port.

1st port is configured with a lun formatted for open systems and the rest of the ports are not serving LUNS.

Thanks for help but all port are configured and presenting LUNs for open systems. All host groups are set to 08 HP.

Ive just checked and it looks like the 2113 and the 2101 actually relate to the microcode version. All ports are running 21-13-xx and the previous version which is saved on the SVP is 21-01-xx. I appreciate that this conflicts with ta previous response that suggested it might be to do with SCSI options.

All ports are running 21-13-xx so it looks like a nameserver thing. No chance of resetting the switch portg yet though.

PS If anyone can check their current microcode version on an XP and see if it mactches what is in the nameserver on their switches back up what I mentioned in my previous post Id appreciate it.

E.g. one of my XP1024's is running microcode version 21-13-xx and each of its CHIP ports is logging in to the switch name server as "HP DISK-SUBSYSTEM 2113". I want to know if the 2113 relates to microcode version 21-13-xx

Not wanting to keep replying to my own questions but Ive got this one dusted now -

I also posted the question on the HDS forums and have the folllowing answer which proves that the 2113 relates to the microcode version -

"I checked this out and it looks like the ports are reporting the major version of the microcode release.

My USP reports in the name server as "Hitachi Disk-Subsystem 5006" and we are running version 50-06-16.

My xp1024 reports in the name server as "HP Disk-Subsystem 2114" and we are running version 21-14-08."

Thought Id repost that on hear as well in an effor to share the knowledge
