ioscan cannot see disks in FC10

Hardware:
N Class
The server is directly connected to an FC10.
We could see the disks, not now.
ioscan does not list the disks except 1 DVD rom and 2 internal disks.

Errors reported have been attached.
The cabling looks ok.
We've changed the fibre cabling to no avail.

Can anyone help?

Re: ioscan cannot see disks in FC10

I have an N with 2 FC10's directly connected.

Did this problem just started?

Did you apply any patches?

Did this start after a reboot?

What kind of FC (fibre channel) card??

How do you have it "wired"/"cabled" ??

What slot is your FC card in ?? It needs to be in the Turbo slots.

How many disks in the FC10??

What is the dial in the back of the FC10 set to??

Which primary slot on the FC10 do you have the cabling plugged into?

Have you REPLACED THE GBICS????? in the FC10???

Re: ioscan cannot see disks in FC10

As a "quick" fix, replace the gbic's. This appears to be the only path to the FC10??

To replace the fc10, shutdown the server, power it off, power off the fc10. replace gbics. power on FC10 FIRST. wait til all lights quit flashing/blinking. Then power on N-class.

The "dial" is normally set to zero - it changes the lun numbers.

Re: ioscan cannot see disks in FC10

Harry

thanks for the help
Can't get to the server right now.

I'll let you know what happens.
Hope it's the GBICS.

Re: ioscan cannot see disks in FC10

Well it was the GBICS!
For a moment anyway.

When the GBICS (2 of them) were replaced the disks were seen by the N class, one disk had died (brand new). The data needs zapping (client's request) so that the test machine (N class) can be sent back to it's original home.

Now the system does not see the disks. A problem occured, don't know what exactly yet, then system was rebooted. Still no disks in ioscan are shown.

Will the system see the disks if all disks (6) in FC10 are dead?

Re: ioscan cannot see disks in FC10

Well, if all disks are died, then the system will not identify any of them! Reboot the system and interrupt it. From boot menu give "search" command see if the disks are identified. If not replace each one and check again.

Check the connectivity and the controller card.

Re: ioscan cannot see disks in FC10

There are 6 disks in the FC10.

At boot-up the system complained that it could not query any of the 6 disks and that the disks could not be attached to their Volume Group.

Does this suggest that disks are dead?

Can't replace the disks right now.

Re: ioscan cannot see disks in FC10

Has anyone experienced similar errors to the ones posted.

Fibre Channel parse error... and
EMS error

Re: ioscan cannot see disks in FC10

Hello,

No, it is extremely remote that all 6 disks fail at the same time. I'm quite sure that disks are perfectly healthy.

What is strange is that when you replaced the GBICS, the FC10 was recognising the disks for a moment, then the system panicked for some reason and, almost in no time at all, you are back to the original situation.

The problem is not the GBICS then, it's something else.

Call HP as this seems weird. With their support and help, I'm sure you can diagnose the problem.

SM,

you should see something like this:

fc 1 0/10/0/0 td CLAIMED INTERFACE HP Tachyon TL/TS
Fibre Channel Mass Storage Adapter
/dev/td1
fcp 1 0/10/0/0.8 fcp CLAIMED INTERFACE FCP Protocol Ada

ext_bus 5 0/10/0/0.8.0.255.0 fcpdev CLAIMED INTERFACE FCP D

disk 13 0/10/0/0.8.0.255.0.0.0 sdisk CLAIMED DEVICE SEAGA
TE ST318304FC
/dev/dsk/c5t0d0 /dev/rdsk/c5t0d0

Where the disk drives turned on BEFORE the server was booted? (WHich is the way it needs to be).

Re: ioscan cannot see disks in FC10

Yes the FC10 was on before the N class was rebooted.

Since the disks are likely to be dead, the client will send us the N class and FC10.
We will have a look and find interesting finds.

Will let you know what happens.

By the way I tried the fcmsutil on /dev/xx and the driver is ok.

Re: ioscan cannot see disks in FC10

Well had a look at the FC10.

It had one LCC- this caused trouble. An amber LED would shine.

I added another LCC, the LED did not light up and the problem was solved.
