metadata stored on EVA?

Im trying to find documentation that states where the metadata of an EVA resides. Is there such a thing? I know the metadata resides in the default disk group, but is it spread out all the drives in the disk group or just the first 8?

TIA,

Todd

Re: metadata stored on EVA?

Just to give you an idea.default disk group has 5 drives which store the metadata. When you create a new disk group it reduces to 4 and 1 on new disk group and so on..

No documents as it's all confidential information.

It selects automatically not the first few drives.

If you are a partner then log in to SAW to get more information.

Re: metadata stored on EVA?

It looks like this may be outdated a bit, but thank you. I did see this post already. Im just trying to see if there is official documentation that states where it resides.

Re: metadata stored on EVA?

Hello Todd,

the quorum disk information is not outdated, quorum disks are still used in the lastest EVAs. So you can safly take this information.

You can do some nasty tricks with the quorum disks, for example some kind of "brain transplantation". If an EVA found two different configurations on the quorum disks, it picks the configuration from those disks, that are in superior number. This can happen if you put quorum disks from another EVA to you system.

@ rampy

Confidential? Mmmhh... everybody who takes a AIS training is getting this information. ;)

Rampy,

How do I request access to SAW? I am a partner. Can you not get to that through the partner portal?

Re: metadata stored on EVA?

Hello Todd,

AFAIK is the services access workbench only accessable for service partner or partner with storageworks speciality.

Please register yourself as partner and you are good to go.

Hope that helps.

Re: metadata stored on EVA?

Ooops Rampy and I jumped together.

The link is down as most of the HP Partner portal links. Please try again later (in few hours or days) and you should be able to get in there.

Good luck pal.

Re: metadata stored on EVA?

Hi,
Mmmm - Metadata is a bit more complicated than specified here as there is metadata on ALL disks in an EVA if the physical disk is in a disk group.
Quorum metadata is just one bit.
I'm sure it will be in here somewhere if you search under EVA metadata or similar.

Re: metadata stored on EVA?

whew, this thread is getting confusing ;-) all disks in EVA have metadata. 5 disks in first (default) dg are ALSO quorum disks. each new disk group will get a quorum disk and one will be removed from the default dg until all groups have one quorum. You can use Command View to flash the Quorum disks if you have the engineer service manual. And yes the persona of an EVA can be transferred to another EVA but only if the disk is moved while it is switched off, then when it powers up it will ask which one it is. All metadata and quorum data is scrubbed from the disk if you use the "remove" option in CV before pulling it.
