mixing different drive sizes in same array

Hi
I'm sure this subject has come up before.I have 4 x 4gig drives in a
RAID 5 array. What will happen if I add 2 x 9 gig drives into the same
array ? will the system use 4 gigs from each 9 gig and discard the other 5 gig ? If yes , is there any way around this ?

P.S. This thread has been moved from Disk to Disk array. - Hp Forum Moderator

Re: mixing different drive sizes in same array

The drives would seen as 4 gig drives in the array . The remaining drive space would be unuseable . There is no way around this if you're adding the drives to the same array . You could add the 9 gig drives as the next logical drive and setup Raid 1 (mirror) .
