Update ESXi 5.0U1 (HP Image) to 5.0U2
Our running build is an HP image (Update 1 build 623860). This was used for a recent installation and we are preparing to patch ESXi. It appears the latest patches / build is update 2 (Update 2 build 914586).
Could we just add the new HP ISO (U2 914586) to the ESXi Images in Updates Manager and run the upgrade, or should we apply the "VMware ESXi 5.0 Complete Update 2" from the Patch Repository in updates manager?
I know HP drivers are included in the ISO, but what about the VMware patch?
This is the first time patching, so we wanted to make sure it was done correctly.
Many thanks in advance for any assistance.

Re: Update ESXi 5.0U1 (HP Image) to 5.0U2
Hi,
HP releases new custom ESXi images whenever there is a need to update any critical components of the image.
HP custom ESXi image key components are:
- HP WBEM Providers and management utilities, which simplify deployment of a managed server
- Required device drivers (NIC, FC, FCoE, iSCSI, and storage), which enable installing the ESXi image on ProLiant servers with new network technology or options
- HP NMI driver, which will log non-maskable interrupt (NMI) source into the Integrated Management Log (IML)
- HP Utilities including hponcfg, hpbootcfg, and hpacucli providing iLO, boot control, and Smart Array controller management respectively.
HP WBEM Providers and storage device drivers supporting boot from SAN are two most critical components.
For example: when a new server introduced which needs a new or updated networking driver, HP releases a custom ESXi image that includes the driver.
VMware typically releases major, minor, or updated releases of ESXi several times a year. HP do not deliver a new custom image based on VMware patches or hot fixes.
Alternatively you can follow the below link for the command line option.

Thanks,
Jagadish
