Create a Array in MSA 1510i

I have created a array (3TB, RAID-5) in MSA1510i 36hrs ago. I check alert msg which is shown

Background parity initialization is currently
queued or in progress on Logical Drive 5 (1907672 MB, RAID 5). If background parity initialization is queued, it will start when I/O is performed on the drive. When background parity initialization completes, the performance of the logical drive will improve.

Is it running or queued? Anyway to check it?

Thank

What is the status of the LUN on the web console. This process takes a long time, hence its recommended that this is done offline.

Re: Create a Array in MSA 1510i

In addition to this you can login to the serial console using the MSA Serial cable.

Here are the steps:-

1. Connect the MSA serial cable to a controller. The MSA serial cable is delivered with every MSA1000/1500/1510i system.
The cable can also be ordered on spare part number 316131-001.
NOTE: Can NOT use a normal RJ-45 cable as the MSA cable is keyed.

2. Enter the default communication settings for the MSA controller:
19200 baud, 8 data, NO parity, 1 Stop & no Flow Control. These settings are also printed on the 9-pin D-SUB connector

3. Identify which controller that is running in active role by executing 'show this_controller' in CLI on both controllers.
The 'Current Role' field will tell if controller is in Active or Standby role.

4. When Active controller has been identified make sure serial cable is attached to the this controller

5. Run the command

show units

It will show all the LUNS and the Status. In the following formats

CLI> show unit 1
Unit 1:
In PDLA mode, Unit 1 IS LUN 2; In VSA mode, Unit 1 is LUN 1
Unit Identifier:
Device Indentifier: 600805F3-00006B20-AE277D4B-B0D100F7
Preferred Path: Controller 1 (this controller)
Cache Status: Enabled
Max Boot Partition: Disabled
Volume Status: VOLUME OK
Parity Init Status: 3% complete
5 Data Disk(s) used by lun 1:
Disk107: Box 1, Bay 07, (B: T: L: 2;04:07)
Disk108: Box 1, Bay 08, (B: T: L: 2;04:08)
Disk207: Box 2, Bay 07, (B: T: L: 2;04:07)
Disk208: Box 2, Bay 08, (B: T: L: 2;04:08)
Spare Disk(s) used by lun 1:
No spare drive is designated
Logical Volume Raid Level: DISTRIBUTED PARITY FAULT TOLERANCE
(RAID5)
stripe_size=16KB
Logical Volume Capacity: 173,658MB

This will show you the percentage of the Parity Initialization.

Hope it helps.

Sunny

Re: Create a Array in MSA 1510i

I don't know if it applies to your system, but some MSA controllers/ firmwareversions suffer from a design/implementation problem (IMO) and do not automatically start the process - they need a little 'kick':

Volume Status : VOLUME OK
Mirror Init Status: waiting for first write

It is sufficient to write a signature or simple partition to get the process running.

Re: Create a Array in MSA 1510i

According to your suggestion, I check it with CLI, get the following message
-------------

Unit 4:
Unit Identifier :
Device Identifier : 600508B3-00933D30-A0007767-73770015
Cache Status : Enabled
Max Boot Partition: Disabled
Volume Status : VOLUME OK
Parity Init Status: waiting for first write
3 Data Disk(s) used by lun 4:
Disk201: Box 2, Bay 01, (B:T:L 1:03:01)
Disk202: Box 2, Bay 02, (B:T:L 1:03:02)
Disk203: Box 2, Bay 03, (B:T:L 1:03:03)
Spare Disk(s) used by lun 4:
No spare drive is designated.
Logical Volume Raid Level: DISTRIBUTED PARITY FAULT TOLERANCE (Raid 5)
stripe_size=16kB
Logical Volume Capacity : 1,907,672MB

---------------
waiting for first write. How to kick off?

Re: Create a Array in MSA 1510i

Please initialize the LUN by addind a disk signature or adding some data to it. This will kick of the Parity Intialization.

Re: Create a Array in MSA 1510i

I tired to map Logical Drive from Target to my server. but.. it pop up " Authization fail" And I also check MSA 1510i with CLI.
"Parity Init Status: waiting for first write"

The Parity Intialization is probably not kick off. :(
