Re: FATA Hard Disk 1TB EVA6400 life time!!

You'll be interested in a statistic called the MTBF , or mean time between failures, which is commonly supplied by the manufacturers of the disks themselves.  if you can pull an OEM part number such as ST3XXXX, or HUSXXX from the disk, google it and find the OEM spec sheet and MTBF should be listed somewhere on there.  It's typically on the order of a couple of years though.  Predicting when an individual disk will fail is impossible, but an average over say, a thousand disks, is much more reliable.

Hope that helps!

Hello,

our experience with 1TB fata drives in EVA is really disapointing. In 4 years period, all 8 1TB drives failed.  Sometimes it was predictive failure, sometimes not. Really poor quality (probably not caused by HP, but real disk manufacturer). We had oldes 500GB Fata drives, none of them failed in 8 yeas preriod.

It depends.

I have seen Customes were using FATA Drives for vmWare and Exchange Clusters. (migrated to FATA by lack of Space).

No wonder if they die fast.

And have Customers they are using FATA for Archiving and never have a Failing Drive.

(At the first Time I see a lot of EVA FATA Drives failing, this was fixed by a Firmware Update)
