MSA 1000 firmware upgrade from 2.38 to 4.48.

Hi.

I've a MSA1000 with a controller. The firmware is rather old ver 2.38. I've a few servers connected to the MSA via FC cables. They've got problem viewing the drives in the MSA in ACU 7.60 and i've read that the firmware of the MSA needs to flashed. Therefore, flashing the firmware directly from 2.38 to 4.48, is it safe to do so? Or i'll need to do a gradual versions upgrade rather than a 4.48 direct??

How do i perform a MSA firmware upgrade via FC? Read from somewhere which states it can be done via FC.

Some of the servers' FC HBAs connected to the MSA are quite old. What's the possiblity of the HBAs be affected by the firmware upgrade.

Please advice. Thanks.

Re: MSA 1000 firmware upgrade from 2.38 to 4.48.

Hi,

First, when we hva older version, and want to upgrade to very newer versions, it├В┬┤s better to use gradual upgrade.

You can upgrade your msa1000, online.Shutdown all servers connected to msa1000,execpt one.Use that server to upgrade online your MSA1000 Firmware.
You can find Here
http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/SoftwareDescription.jsp?lang=en&cc=us&prodTypeId=12169&prodSeriesId=377751&prodNameId=305215&swEnvOID=1005&swLang=13&mode=2&taskId=135&swItem=co-36665-1

OR

Make your firmware update using offline using ISO Cd.Download this ISO: http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/SoftwareDescription.jsp?lang=en&cc=us&prodTypeId=12169&prodSeriesId=377751&prodNameId=305215&swEnvOID=1005&swLang=13&mode=2&taskId=135&swItem=co-36807-1
and burn a CD, then turn off all servers, then boot one of the servers from this CD, then it detects all your MSA1000 hardware and you can upgrade it.

You have to consult the HP compatibility list and verify, if version 4.48, is compatible with your HBA├В┬┤s firmware

Good Work

Re: MSA 1000 firmware upgrade from 2.38 to 4.48.

I did this upgrade about a month ago. I used the windows program on the MSA CD and flashed it using the procedure from the documentation.
What was important was to shut down all servers except the one you are using for the flash procedure. Also the sequence to start the MSA (first the attached boxes, wait a mnute or two, then the MSA, and last the servers)was noted as important in the documentation.
The flash procedure went without any major problems except that two of the six servers lost the connected logical drives. A reboot of the server solved it, but I was a bit worried for a few minutes.

Re: MSA 1000 firmware upgrade from 2.38 to 4.48.

Hi guys.. thanks for the advices.

In the case of flashing the firmware, what are the chances it'll fail or the servers will not be able to access the storage. Quite worried about this.

Is there any way to roll back the old firmware, if any of the above happens?
