MSA 2000 FC Storage Controller failover issue

Hi,

We have MSA 2000fc. When we simulate a controller failure, the vdisk presented to the servers are missing. we found the advisory from HP.

http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/Document.jsp?lang=en&cc=us&taskId=120&prodSeriesId=3687115&prodTypeId=12169&objectID=c01440945

The advisory says that it is by design that MSA2000fc will not support dual path failure.

MY question is will there be a solution to resolve this issue.

Regards,

Jacob

This can only be solved if HP (or dothill) rewrites the controller firmware so that when a controller loses the link to both its ports, it will move ownership of its vdisks to the other controller. Maybe an HP insider can provide more specific information.

Re: MSA 2000 FC Storage Controller failover issue

Jacob,

It depends how you simulated controller failure.

If you pull both FC cables from a single controller, did the controller actually fail? No. There is still ICL communication between the two controllers. Once the heartbeat fails between controllers will the VDISK move to the active controller.

The best way to test controller failover is to perform a shutdown of the Storage Controller owning the VDISK.

What is the likelyhood of both paths failing at the same time.

Don't expect any changes to this methodology.

Yeah I have not tried shutting one controller, we just tried pulling out both the cables. Thanks for the support.
