MSA1000 Unable to delete LUNs

Hi,

I Have rp5470 server connected directly to MSA1000 SAN switch.

I am accessing storage from HP ACU CLI/ Installed at same UNIX server (HP-UX 11.11), following LUNs are created;

=> controller serialnumber=P56350DX3PS01S logicaldrive all show

MSA1000 at SGM05020J9

  array A
   logicaldrive 1 (350 GB, RAID 5, Expanding)
   logicaldrive 2 (350 GB, RAID 5, Waiting for Expansion)
   logicaldrive 3 (550 GB, RAID 0, Waiting for Expansion)
   logicaldrive 4 (146 GB, RAID 5, Waiting for Expansion)
   logicaldrive 5 (39.9 GB, RAID 6 (ADG), Waiting for Expansion)
   logicaldrive 6 (39.9 GB, RAID 5, Waiting for Expansion)

  array B
   logicaldrive 8 (1023 MB, RAID 0, OK)
   logicaldrive 9 (249 GB, RAID 0, OK)

The problem I am facing is I am not able to delete LUNs, please find the command I have run;

"controller serialnumber=P56350DX3PS01S logicaldrive 8 delete"

I am getting following error after that;

Error: Could not delete logicaldrive 8

Please assist if possible,

Regards,

Aamir Majeed.

Re: MSA1000 Unable to delete LUNs

Delete logical drive 9 first.

I believe if you were using the ACU (GUI) you would not see the delete option for LD8.,

Re: MSA1000 Unable to delete LUNs

Hi,

Thanks for your reply. Just for clarification, why MSA1000 is behaving like it, means if we have created some LUN and why we are not able to delete it.

Thanks.

Re: MSA1000 Unable to delete LUNs

The MSA1000 is bascially a smart array controller (6400 something maybe?) with some disks and i/o modules.

There are other threads on this forum about this topic.

http://h30499.www3.hp.com/t5/Disk-Disk-Arrays-Legacy/Delete-MSA1000-logical-drive-but-not-the-last-in-the-array/td-p/503207

for example. I looked real quickly but couldn't find any thread with an explanation why.

Re: MSA1000 Unable to delete LUNs

This is how the SmartArray controller hehaves by design. The SA5300 used in the MSA1x00 does it exactly the way current controller do. Rather than deleting this volume, it may be re-used for a different host. If you want to build a new array or need a set of smaller LUNs, the array must be deleted.
