XCS 10.000.00?

Hi,

just received a newsletter about the ancouncement of EVA P6000 that also states that XCS 10.000.00 for current EVA 4x,6x,8x is now available. However, so far I haven't found anything.

Do you know when this will be out?

Thanks

Re: XCS 10.000.00?

Hey!

What newsletter? Google doesn't mention this firmware anywhere but here.

Also as far as I can tell it's not really HP's practice to let customers know on exactly what date something will be available.. I suppose there is a lot of testing done on the firmwares.

All the other EVA firmwares are available on http://software.hp.com

Re: XCS 10.000.00?

This newsletter (it's in German so you might need to translate it using Google or something):

----------------------------------------

Re: XCS 10.000.00?

Ah cool, that makes more sense.

The x400 (4400, 6400, 8400) will apparently get the same firmware, not the older ones.

As it doesn't appear to be out yet: Maybe if you contact HP Support you would be able to join a test group?

Re: XCS 10.000.00?

Oh, well....

Reminds me about a little 'talk' with a colleague who was in a sales brainwash and came back claiming that the support for CV on the EVA-4400 management module was available *now*.

I was a bit unimpressed ;-)
and told him I wasn't able to see it on any official downloadable documents or download portals, so it *did not* exist for me.

Of course he was a bit unhappy with my response...

And it took many more months before the first release came out - with lots of limitations.

Lean back and relax - or do something useful ;-)
We will see when it's available...

Re: XCS 10.000.00?

Maybe, but we have no EVA to install test firmware on...

Do you know why the new firmware is named XCS 10.000? I thought that the new naming convention was "09534000" and so on.

Re: XCS 10.000.00?

This doesn't sound like an invitation to a beta-test...

And 10.000.00 - who know's...

maybe it is a transcription error -
or somebody thought it is time and a great idea to introduce _just another_ version number formatting.

Don't try to understand what's going on in the heads of these people -
treat it like an opaque string.

Re: XCS 10.000.00?

Maybe it's just to lure customers in, stop them from going to other vendors when there are new features "on the way".

Well 10 is after 09..
10.000.00 is also one number less than 09.534.000 :)

Re: XCS 10.000.00?

Yes I was told by HP support that a new firmware version was on it's way. Had a problem where snapshots that are being deleted in quick succession would cause a controller to reboot.

Also there's rumour of VAAI support too.

Re: XCS 10.000.00?

There's an early access program for the P6000 EVAs going on now. General availability is expected shortly. Here's a link for info: http://h18004.www1.hp.com/products/solutions/new-era.html

XCS 10000000 will be released for the x400s at the same time the P6000 is generally available.

Regarding the version number format, you'll most often see it listed as XCS 10000000 rather than 10.000.00 or 10.00.00.00. In any case, this is the successor to XCS 09534000.

CV 9.4 is out now. The new XCS (for P6000 and EVA x400) should be out soon.

Re: XCS 10.000.00?

CV 9.4 is not on software.hp.com or google so I doubt CV 9.4 is "out".

CV (and previous versions) can be found on HP SUM (Support Case Manager) and is available for everyone with a contract.

Re: XCS 10.000.00?

This is GREAT news! I recall having read snippets of news about an upcoming firmware which purportedly offers Thin Provisionng and Dynamic LUN migration for the EVA family. I certainly hope this will not be "beta" when it rolls out.

At least the EVAs can now keep up with NetApp arrays.

Anyone knows if this will be a FREE upgrade with thin provisioning thrown in as freebie?

Re: XCS 10.000.00?

I thought the Thin Provisioning and Dynamic LUN migration features were only going to be applicable to the new P6000 models.

Does anyone have the CV9.4 install package yet? Are there any release notes?

Re: XCS 10.000.00?

Dynamic LUN migration and thin provisioning will be available on the P6300 and P6500 and the older EVA x400(4400, 6400, 8400) since they both run the same firmware. Thin provisioning will be available for everyone. For Dynamic lun migration you need a business-copy license. (non official, but from what I've heard). I thought XCS 10.000.00 and the P6300/P6500 will be announced officially at HP Discover (6-10June).

Re: XCS 10.000.00?

The killer feature for me with XCS 10 will be that you can now grow a LUN beyond 2TB! Large LUN's have been supported since the x400 series launched but as we unfortunately found out if your LUN starts out <2TB it stops at 2TB and if you create it larger than 2TB it can't be grown.

Re: XCS 10.000.00?

Thin Provisioning and dynamic LUN migration -- features that should hopefully be "free". This should at least make the EVAs catch up with industry and NetApp arrays....

Hopefully HP also should now have a vSphere Plugin for the EVAs and the P series -- just like NetApp's and EMC's.
