a disk in SAN is viewed several times with ioscan

Hello,
I have a rx7620 system with HP11iv2 installed.
This server is connected to 2 IBM disks attached through 4 Fibre Channels. The 2 IBM disks belong to a SAN.

The strange situation I see is that each disk appears in 12 entries in the output of ioscan -fnC disk (3 entries for fibre channel path)
Why does it occur? I'm expecting that the disk appears only 1 time.

I checked that a IBM disk x spans over the fibre channels and it is identified by the same BUS number (98 or 100)
Would be possible to have a command that lists all disks (internal and external), but with only 1 entry for each disk?

Below some other info about the hw configuration.

The machine has 4 HBAs.
The server is connected to 2 switches; each connection with a switch is performed through 2 ports.

I need to catch in a unique entry each disk in SAN.
Thanks a lot in advance for your support

Re: a disk in SAN is viewed several times with ioscan

It's normal to see more than one device per disk because you have multiple paths to the same disk, one for each HBA and host port.

This situation is solved by using a multipath software, like secure path, or using PVLINKS in HP-UX, where you add each device to the same volume group.

Hello Ivan,
thanks a lot for your answer. Please could you send me the links to these products?
I need to check if they are installed in my server.

Thanks

Hi Michele,

Perhaps you could check if you buy a multipathing software along with your storage, IBM provide SDD for multipathing on HPUX

Re: a disk in SAN is viewed several times with ioscan

Hi, I solved using IBM SDD for multipath.
I do not know how to increase the points assigned to Sandy.
Please let me know if it is possible.
