How OS migration can help a CIO in Asia Pacific

Microsoft ended support for Windows XP on April 8, 2014. We all know that the nature of IT is such that, sooner than we think, this Migration Event will be followed by other operating systems, such as Windows 7. CIOs across the Asia Pacific region are now being forced to figure out how to handle the risk of OS Migration Events. Instead of a risk, you might consider this as an opportunity to revamp your organization’s end-user computing model. Here are the Top 10 benefits I see of an OS migration:

  1. iStock_000024776337_ExtraSmall.jpgReview the application portfolio and improve user satisfaction: Applications depend on the underlying operating system. Therefore, any OS migration is a good forcing event to review how existing applications will run in a new environment. CIOs have an opportunity to re-engage their business users and review their applications portfolio to improve user satisfaction.
  2. Improve security: Not having the latest operating system leaves an organization’s end users at a major risk of security threats. Rather than look at this as a threat, a CIO could use this event to plug security holes—not only with an upgrade, but also with a comprehensive security review.
  3. Consider mobility as a tool to improve productivity: With a change in operating system, organizations can review their business applications and business processes to see which modern devices make sense in their environment. At this time they might also consider migrating to Android/iOS to take advantage of mobility for the enterprise. This can bring about an era of improved productivity.
  4. Improve morale: Modern operating systems will dictate the use of modern devices and lead to improved employee morale. (This is a soft benefit that many organizations should consider.)
  5. Accelerate compliance: With improved security and regular updates within the latest operating systems, organizations—especially those in the financial services and healthcare sectors—can reduce their efforts with compliance to various regulatory authorities.
  6. Improve performance: Lack of updates on legacy operating systems will impact performance. An upgrade gives the user the option for modern devices and with the new OS, an improved performance.
  7. Update on the “coolness factor”: Remember, modern operating systems, coupled with latest devices, have a coolness factor. How cool is it to use an outdated OS?
  8. Improve the ability to compete: The operating system impacts the application, and the application impacts the business process. By upgrading the operating system and making sure the applications run in a new environment, employees will execute business processes better and faster, giving an organization the ability to compete. The flip-side of this: if an organization doesn’t upgrade but their competitor does, it puts the competitor at an advantage.
  9. Reduce costs: A review of the end user compute model during an OS Migration Event will ensure all costs related to licensing, devices, applications and cost of maintaining will be reviewed. This is a huge opportunity to reduce any run costs! CIOs should take advantage of this.
  10. Transform from a CAPEX to an OPEX model: Finally, an OS Migration Event is a great time to look at the services suite of an organization, and consolidate these services into a unified “as-a-service” delivery model via an outsourced provider. The CIO can make the CFO very happy by transforming the entire spend from a CAPEX model to an OPEX model.
