Maximizing the value of Systems of Engagement

Nadhan on ‎05-07-2013 05:32 AM

Enterprises must work towards transforming their Systems of Record in a manner that best addresses their winning partnership with the Systems of Engagement. The abstract for the HP Discover 2013 session, DT3024 - Systems of Record: extracting value from your traditional applications asserts, “If you want to be effective, you need to understand your current applications portfolio, rationalize it and selectively migrate it to the cloud.” As narrated in this video on HP Applications Transformation and Systems of Engagement, Systems of Record can’t be overlooked. After all, they run today’s organizations even though they may be complicated and expensive.

We hear a lot of discussion about Systems of Engagement. In fact, I’m presenting on this topic at HP Discover 2013 and have already requested your engagement as I work on my session. I have also asserted how such systems can be used to predict the future, while citing some real-life examples. All that said, Systems of Engagement cannot effectively exist by themselves! They rely on a strong backbone of Systems of Record — provided they are seamlessly integrated to deliver business value. This is my key takeaway from the video.

Competitive enterprises must look to Systems of Record as an opportunity to differentiate themselves by applying the right techniques to transform the right applications to the cloud. In the brave new social world of mobile interactions, enterprises must also look to selectively mobilizing Systems of Record. The Systems of Record may be dated. They may also be running on legacy platforms , which are expensive to maintain with little-to-no technical expertise or supporting documentation. But the data maintained by these applications is still valuable. Just take a look at how Big Data (including new unstructured data and legacy structured data) opens up opportunities for enterprises to differentiate themselves. Therefore, integration across this landscape of systems is critical.

I look forward to session DT3024 to discover other techniques, tools and services that are likely to be outlined, and specific steps enterprises can take to modernize their Systems of Record.

It’s also important that enterprises have a partner who serves as their trusted advisor in their transformation journey – sort of like their Transformation GPS. This partner can exercise the art of Applications Transformation while applying the science of Systems of Engagement to realize business value for enterprises.

In short: Finding partners who specialize in addressing Systems of Record challenges OR developing the Systems of Engagement is good. Finding partners who specialize in both is priceless.

How about you? How is your enterprise addressing the challenges of Systems of Record? Do you have a Transformation GPS? Have you considered a partner who specializes in Systems of Record as well as Systems of Engagement? Please let me know.
