Recent articles posted on The Business Value Exchange capture the top-of-mind thoughts from today's business leaders. In July, Computer Weekly's Bryan Glick interviews Nikhil Kulkarni, Workplace and Mobility Practice Advisor for HP Enterprise Services, to discuss how BYOD is changing the enterprise landscape. Sarah Lethbridge of the Cardiff Business School writes about employee empowerment, and community manager Helen Beckett relates key takeaways from a recent talk on establishing trust, given by Professor Andrew Godley, the Director of the Henley Centre for Entrepreneurship.

Work is where the worker is.

Many organizations are looking at how to use consumer technology such as smartphones and tablets, to bring more flexibility to the way they operate, and to meet demands from employees to use the sort of technology they are familiar with at home to access corporate IT systems. New entrants to markets are using such technology to break down barriers to entry and pose a new competitive threat to established players. As a result, every company needs to evaluate how to invest in enterprise mobility to introduce more flexible ways of working that can respond to dramatic market shifts.

In this video interview with Nikhil Kulkarni, Workplace and Mobility Practice Advisor at HP Enterprise Services, we discuss how IT leaders can respond to such demands and to help their organisations introduce innovative new business models enabled by a mobile workforce – and demanded by mobile customers.

“One of the best parts of my job is when I work with teams who, and it’s very clear from the start, are in a pretty frustrated place. That might sound strange, but let me explain. Firstly, it’s interesting to start understanding why they might be frustrated, and it could be for a whole host of reasons. For example: lots of changes might have been forced upon them that they didn’t want, or don’t think is for the best; the processes that they work on might be broken meaning that they don’t feel that they are able to ever do a good job and they might not feel that they have the opportunity to make any changes that benefit both customers, and their working lives,” says Sarah Lethbridge.

Unpredictability has been the new normal since the collapse of financial markets and structures redefined the global economy. And it’s the tenet of the emerging digital economy, too, where disruption comes out of the blue and no one can be completely sure where future value resides. For marketers and product developers, these shifting sands pose many challenges.

In a world where no path is clear cut for long and the route has to be re-evaluated regularly and rigorously, it was comforting to hear of a golden rule: prioritise trust and reputation. It arose out of a talk given by Professor Andrew Godley, Director of the Henley Centre for Entrepreneurship. The context was a talk on market making; how to fathom whether a new product has legs and how consumers will respond to the novelty factor.

Although this advice was intended for entrepreneurs, steering them away from short term opportunism toward long term credibility; there is a takeaway for digital marketers as well. Find out more
