What are the critical things to consider when moving applications to the cloud? Does it always make sense? What are the main drivers?

  • Are there technical reasons for moving things to the cloud?

Ask yourself is this a like-for-like transformation where the business has exactly what it has right now after you move to the cloud? In other words, like-for-like transformation means you’re doing it for technical or operational reasons; you’re not really delivering a benefit to a business process in the transformation.

  • Are there business reasons for moving things to the cloud?road through mountains.jpg

Is the application going to exist two or three years down the line? Does it look like it’s a good opportunity to move to cloud right now? It may not make sense, because the cost will never be regained, and it will be retired in the near future anyway.

Be sure to look at it two ways. Are we doing this as a like-for-like transformation which may reduce risk, improve operations, or are we doing it for a business transformation where we’re actually going to change the way the business operates? So start there, drill down into the details and then come back and validate that you’re doing it for all the right reasons.
