HP laser Jet 500 Color M551

I have this printer and when I was replacing a toner the instrcutions said to remove and recyle the clear plastic piece to the left of the toners. I did so, but this appears to have been a residue catcher. Has anyone else experienced this? I am thinking I should not have removed the plastic piece, but that is what the instructions said...wondring if this is a replacement part?
