24 x 7 removal of spam

We are starting to see more and more spam.  And now in other forums.

If we don't have 24 x 7 moderators, we need to automate this process and enlist forum members to help.

I've been tagging each topic with "spam", using Report Inappropriate Content and posting in Issues Requiring Moderator Intervention.

http://h30499.www3.hp.com/t5/tag/spam/tg-p

http://h30499.www3.hp.com/t5/forums/tagdetailpage/tag-cloud-grouping/message/tag-cloud-style/recent/message-scope/all/user-scope/all/tag-scope/single/tag-id/6435/timerange/all/tag-visibility-scope/public

One thing about spam in the new forum, the forum goes out of its way to broadcast the spam to everyone:

1) It is on the main page as: Unread Discussions

2) "" Recent topics

3) "" Solved posts

4) In categories as recent posts.

5) And listed on each board.

One solution is that none of the above 5 will list these topics iff a spam tag ON the topic is there AND that tag was added by a user of >= a specific rank, to prevent "spam plonking".

And until this user is removed, there should be a new ribbon, SPAMMER, added to that user.  :-)

Re: 24 x 7 removal of spam

I think the tagging is a great idea.

For the helpers out there ( you know who you are), it makes clear whether a topic has been dealt with, or not yet.

For the moderators is supposedly now becomes a trivial action to clean them out.

Looks easier than taking action on a last reply to the moderator attention needed topic.

Now if I may, Dennis, how the heck did you come up with: http://h30499.www3.hp.com/t5/tag/spam/tg-p   ???

How do I officially search for a topic with a given tag? The help was no help (I tried)

Some pages shows 'top tag' block, which give me some tags, but no free format way to enter a tag to look for.

The Search, and Advanced search pages gave no clue on how to search for, or filter by, tags.

Should there at the very least not be a [with all the tags] entry field under ADVANCED SEARCH OPTIONS?

Better still, could there be a 'tag' in the search drop-down options  [Community|Category|Board| ... Tag]

Cheers,

Hein

If you click through the different tags on board level you can see that only the tag word change

f.e.

http://h30499.www3.hp.com/t5/tag/feedback/tg-p/board-id/community-feedback-suggestions

...

These are only for community feedback suggestion, cutting all from and including board-id you have the tag for the whole community.

My guess how he found it ;-)

Best,

Stephan

Right, rigth. I can do the math, and had come to the same conclusion.

I should have asked more clearly : 'what is the official method to get that query'.

And can be automated.   Right.

Tried and true reverse engineering.  And I just pusha the buttons.  ;-)

Or you can look at all 40 pages until you find it.

Boards have top tags, categories don't.  And one at the forum top.

I guess there is no need to search since there is a direct URL for tags.  But tags in the search window will eventually find posts with tags and show up highlighted.

>The Search, and Advanced search pages gave no clue on how to search for, or filter by, tags.

Right, they only show the tag in the result.

>If you click through the different tags on board level you can see that only the tag word change

Right.  I'm not sure if you can search categories, it's not obvious.

I tried with "ct-p/bsc-407" but it ignored it.

It appears you either search or linear search.  Or cherchez le singe!

Note: It appears that tag updates aren't synchronous and take time to appear in the tag cloud.

Re: 24 x 7 removal of spam

Speaking of 'where is waldo', did you notice where the spam tag ends up amongst tags? Alphabetically.

The spammer(s) are now also adding tags, so it is not as easy to see whether a topic has been flagged as spam.

Maybe we need to use 'Aardvark' or 'Aaargh!' as tag to mark spam to be removed ?

Speaking of removing.... How come we have to look at this crap for days before it is actually removed?

That was the purpose of this topic.  We don't seem to have moderators that work on the weekend.

Your profile can adjust this: most popular, newest and my tags

I.e. the more spam, the more it shows first.  ;-)

You can increase the tags per post.  Or simply always add one.  It seems there can be more than one??
Now spammers are replying to their own topics, with different IDs.

Re: 24 x 7 removal of spam

>Boards have top tags, categories don't.

Thanks to mr google's robots, Categories have tags if you know what to do:

http://h30499.www3.hp.com/t5/tag/zombie%20master/tg-p/category-id/itrc-117

http://h30499.www3.hp.com/t5/tag/zombie%20master/tg-p/category-id/operating_systems

There seems to be a display name for each category and an internal name:

http://h30499.www3.hp.com/t5/Operating-Systems/ct-p/operating_systems

This also can be entered with:

http://h30499.www3.hp.com/t5/X/ct-p/operating_systems
