How, where can I find old topics. You lost comunity knowledge!!!

I tried may times to find old topics in new borads. NEVER, NEVER I found it!

YOU (WE???) LOST MINE AND COMUNITY KNOWLEDGE

 

For example, find in new borda topis "where can I find serial number of EVA3000" - it was in ITRC. You (we???) lost it.

And many, many more!

Well, something's not working about your (HP's) whole "well, search engines will re-index the new site eventually..." plan! It's bad enough that Google has slowly become an unusable, depressing crap-shoot of a navigation engine in that almost no results are even relevant anymore... but those one or two awesome times when it DOES return a relevant result, what is it always redirecting to? "Oh, we've moved forums! Enjoy your link rot."

It's not always about search engines being able to re-index a website structure change. It's about the past millions of posts people have written on the internet where people are linked to relevant forum posts or topics, and those links are now dead with no trail. Just *dead* links. "Yeah, you can fix that, see this post: (*links to HP forum*)" - bam, that link is now dead and a person who needs that information is just left with a brick-wall dead end, "Oh, we've moved forums! Enjoy your link rot."

Guys, it shouldn't be that hard to write a simple lookup-adapter script that looks-up the old post ID and references it to the new location. The script and implementation is simple, even if the board IDs and topic IDs changed: create a lookup table in SQL, traverse the old forum database (which I'm SURE you have backed up somewhere), and run the migration algorithm against the old-to-new mappings, and instead of PERFORMING the remapping, simply add each remapping as an indexed row in the SQL table. Then, a simple script placed at the same incoming URL as these links go to ("/service/forums/questionanswer.do"), will read the incoming topic ID and send an "HTTP/1.1 301 Moved Permanently" header and redirect the client to the new forum location.

That will solve search engine link rot, will allow users to find old linked topics, and will provide a permanent solution to the forum migration problem. And I give you this idea to your developers freely with no strings attached - the ultimate reward I could get for solving this "unsolvable" problem for HP would be to be able to find the information I need to find once again. Personally, I was just looking for information on repairing the bootable QuickPlay function of a DV2000 notebook that was upgraded to Windows 7. No such luck so far, but all the topics on HP forums are dead ends, so that doesn't help :/

Unfortunately they used this plan once before for docs.hp.com.  :-(

It's not the script but how many resources to back it up, both machine and disk.
