We need an 'advanced search screen'

Please folks, take a look around at other forums/support-sites past and present. "turn on suggestions" !

You can NOT satisfy all search needs with one dinky entry fields and a drop box which is NOT honored.

What we need is either, or both

  1. Escape sequences in the entry, like +subject:xxx or +board:itrc-288 (OpenVMS) +since:<date> -author:hein
  2. Multi field entry form with options like
  • board
  • subject
  • content
  • attachement
  • date range

And if i look for something in a board, and it can not be found, just tell me.

Don't 'help' me by expanding the range

I'm a big boy, i can wipe my own behind.

Cheers,

Hein

Re: We need an 'advanced search screen'

There is an advanced search, you first have to click on the "Go".

The unfortunate thing about the above "Go" link, I can't  right or middle click on it so I lose the page I'm on.

Re: We need an 'advanced search screen'

Thanks Dennis, I see it now, and it is in the help.

I guess I thought the screen after the 'go'  button already was the advanced search

The real way to get to the advanced search did not stand out enough for me.

(what does 'go' even mean? It is not going to what I typed. Why not call it 'search...')

The 'by location' on advanced search looks good, but that is a post-filter right?

Seems that would cause a lot of avoidable work, so I would prefer to stick it on the search.

'By date' it a bit silly with these arbitrary chunks of time (microsoft compatible?)

Why not allow for a real date entry... on the search, but as filter if need be.

I would like a 'subject', but realize subject wording is not very reliable.

And I would welcome an  'old itrc topic number' field of course.

Yeah, the web search engines like Bing and Google will eventually map to the new stuff,

but there are hardcoded links in the old topics.

An automated mapping would be better, but an explicit search option would be welcome.

( side thought: Is there a place/opportunity for explicit, exposed, topic numbers in the new forums?

Some UID if it is not too crazy long?)

It might be that 4819977 above but you need the whole path.

No kudos to go with the SOLVED! icon?

Dennis, fishing>> No kudos to go with the SOLVED! icon?

Just applying the old ITRC rule... If it is not an answer you like, even though correct, assign 0 or 1 point :-)

Just kidding. Done.

Kudo's really should be implied with a  'solved'  marker huh?

Cheers mate,

Hein

I see begging for points has survived the translation from old ITRC to new HPSC!!

I have to make up for my 10,000s of lost ... points.  :-)

Too true, Dennis.

I do have to agree with Hein's assertion that "solved" should imply a kudo.

Re: We need an 'advanced search screen'

The search still needs improvement.

I was looking for an old thread, found it in google, opened it in google cache, copied an exact phrase, searched this phrase in the advanced search here and it was still too hard to find!

The topic was

by the way.

Hope this helps!

Torsten.

Re: We need an 'advanced search screen'

Torsten - what was the phrase you selected from that thread that still made it hard to find the thread?  I searched for a portion of the title and the thread was the first result in the "suggestions" list - but of course the title is more heavily weighted when running a search - so I'd be interested to duplicate your results and pass along feedback to the search team if necessary.

Hopefully everyone notices the "Go" link has been replaced with a highlighted "Search" link, and we've added a bit of text to the search box to make it's purpose more obvious.

I work for HPE.
