2.2 kernel

All,

Does 2.2 kernel support 64-bit architecture?

Re: 2.2 kernel

I found that 2.1 was implemented on Alpha. And Alpha only exists in 64 bit (since the beginning of the '90). So, yes.
But probably not for Intel/AMD because they were not available then.

Re: 2.2 kernel

I still run an Alpha with RedHat 7.2 so, yes but do not remember if there are other cpu supported ? as Wim say's surely not on AMD or intels.

Re: 2.2 kernel

In the 2.2 series of kernels, only Alpha support was 64 bit (that I'm aware of).

All others (sparc, intel, powerpc, etc. etc.) were only 16 or 32 bit.

With the advent of later generation 2.4 kernels, Itanium support was added, and later on AMD64.

But for decent support for AMD64, you'd need to go with a 2.6 series of kernel (in my opinion).

Re: 2.2 kernel

i tried 2.2.24 kernel on P4 machine, it recongnises the architecture, does this mean it supports 64-bit architecutre?

Re: 2.2 kernel

P4 machines mught support both 32/64 bit. By installing OS you may not be able to confirm. Should be some command to find out. One way to check is run file command and see. exp: file /bin/ls output will tell you if it is 32 or 64 bit
Should be some other command to get exact info
