The only references I can find to 36mm tapes concern label printers like this:

Hi,

Is it perhaps a 36 track not 36 mm tape drive you ask for ? I have never heard about a 36 mm tape.

Ahhh! 36 track!! We used to have a StorageTek 4280 that would read 3480 tapes. I think this would be 3490 tape? Here's a URL that claims its product has been tested with HP9000 systems:

This "36mm tape drive" is the way my supervisor put it. I guess you both are right guessing about 36 track.
