ARCserve

I am using ARCserve to backup Oracle database(cold backup) and all unix directories. The database shuts down at 11:30pm, and it re-starts at around 6am the next day. After 7 hour 1 minute 46 second, not all files have been backup, and it's only 0.41 MB/Minute during the backup process.
Can anyone tell me what's going on here?

Thanks in advance

Re: ARCserve

Make sure you aren't using compression with ARCserve, let the tape drive do it. I agree you should have a lot better performance, but it also depends upon your hardware configuration.

How about providing as a TEXT attachment:

/opt/ignite/bin/print_manifest
(if you don't have that load it from here: http://www.software.hp.com/products/IUX/download.html)

the output from

ioscan -fn
bdf
vgdisplay -v

Also, which tape drive you are using and what kind of tape drive it is.

Also, when was the last time you cleaned the tape drive?

Re: ARCserve

Hi
I assume ARCserve is running on a Windows computer and the drive is connected to this. Do you run other backups to this drive and with normal performance. Try ftp (in both directions) from the Windows box to the Unix (don't forget switching to binary mode) to check if this can be a network problem.

Re: ARCserve

How much data is being backed up?

What type tape drive (DDS, DDS3, DLT700,)?

Is the tape drive directly connected to the machine with the data being backed up or is it over the network?

What is the OS of the backup server?

People will be better equiped to advise once you provide more information.

Re: ARCserve

There are some Carrier sense errors listed.

This might be a mismatch in duplex setting with the server and the switch.
Make sure that the duplex setting match.

Also this could be due to a bad network cable.
Try replacing it.

T G:
I don't understand what you have just said. I am new to UNIX admin, and I hope you can give me steps to solve this possible "mismatch" in duplex.

Thanks.

Re: ARCserve

You can check on your swich following setting

autoneg on/off
speed 10/100
duplex half/full

on your server start sam

click networking and communications
click network interface cards
highlight current interface card
actions, modify

here you read/modify currend settings.

With regards Robert-Jan.

Re: ARCserve

I followed your steps, and

autoneg: on
speed: no setting
duplex: no setting

What's next?

Thanks.
