Totally replace NFS. No.

CIFS/9000, based on Samba 3.x runs on top of NFS on the client side and can be more robust when properly configured.

Simon,

Be interested in the problems you are seeing with NFS -- it's a pretty mature technology.

Cheers,
Tony

Re: Any product can substitute nfs??

It's probably not a problem with MicroFocus as much as it is understanding the nature of NFS (CIFS for that matter). Network filesystems by their nature and design are fragile and NFS file locking is very important detail to understand before writing any code. For any network filesystem, the network connection must be protected--no PCs, PDAs, tablets, etc. The network must be shared only with mature and cooperative clients, in other words, a dedicated network. And of course, don't try anything until your patches are up to date, especially networking and NFS. And be sure to get a copy of the NFS for HP-UX book by Dave Olker.
