Backup query

Is it possible to connect a DAT40e to a K580 HP-UX Server?

I ask because...

1] The K-Box has HP-HSC & HP-PB I/O capability only
2] HP DAT drives seem only to be LVD/SE [I've been looking at the spec of C5687B for example]

Thank you !
Regards

Re: Backup query

Both HP-HSC Y& HP-PB are type of buses. YOu can add, or have instaled yet, scsi cards.

run ioscan -fkCext_bus to find your instaled cards ie:

ext_bus 0 10/0 c720 CLAIMED INTERFACE GSC built-in Fast/Wide SCSI Interface
ext_bus 1 10/4/8 scsi1 CLAIMED INTERFACE HP 28655A - SE SCSI ID=7
ext_bus 16 10/4/9 lpr2 CLAIMED INTERFACE HP 28655A - Parallel Interface
ext_bus 3 10/12/0 CentIf CLAIMED INTERFACE Built-in Parallel Interface
ext_bus 2 10/12/5 c720 CLAIMED INTERFACE Built-in SCSI

10/4/8 is a SCSI SE card. I guess you can use that type of cards to plug your DAT40 driver ( it is a SE too), if you find the correct cable.

Re: Backup query

Hi,
Is there a Narrow SE SCSI bus (50 pin connector) on the K580. You can use this if you have a 50-68 pin cable. But don't try to connect the drive to a HVD SCSI bus, it does not work.

Re: Backup query

Thanks both

I've looked in the K-Class config guide.
There's the following option:
"28655A. HP-PB Single ended SCSI-2 interface card"

Do you mean that with a suitable cable this will do the job?

Re: Backup query

Hi,

Yes, if there is a Wide SE or LVD bus you need a 68-68 pin cable but if there is a Narrow SE bus you need a 50-68 pin cable. Check the connectors on the K580.

Re: Backup query

The LVD/SE standard is backward compatible to the SE interface on the K-series. However, you probably won't see very good performance on this tape drive since the tape needs data faster than the SE interface can provide. This causes multiple restarts because the tape stops streaming. Make sure there are no other devices connected to the SE bus.

Re: Backup query

Leif
Interesting & useful

Bill
I think we'll go with...
2 x C6365A. NSE DDS-3 Tape Drives in an external enclosure

Going DDS-4 is gonna be too much Hassle
[Sorry re poor pun]

Thanks all

Re: Backup query

Could be worst... You will share the bandwidhth and the performance will decrease even more...

1- 1 DAT 3
2- 1 DAT 4
3- 2 DAT 3.

Re: Backup query

Actually, multiple tape drives are fine as long as you use backup software that uses just one at a time. fbackup is ideal as you can specify multiple -f options and it will use the next tape drive when the current one is full...even easier than a tape library. Backup in parallel (such as HP's Omniback or Hicomp's HiBack) will require a faster interface.

Re: Backup query

I can't get the *!+@# points to stick
[Yes I've done the cache 'n' cookies thing, but to no avail]
Will try later

Our tape solution so far:
We're opting for 2 INTERNAL DDS-3 Drives
We have an empty media bay available & we'll make another one by removing the DVD-ROM

Any comments?
I reckon it'll work
