Re: CD Rom Failure?
This is what i found in tech-docs:
This means an error was reported by the device driver. The most likely cause
is an open drive door, or the disc not being up to speed. Check the following
items when you receive this error:
a. Make sure that an audio disc is not in the drive.
b. Check the internal flat ribbon cable to make sure it is properly
connected.
c. Move the CD-ROM device driver and MSCDEX.EXE statement to the end of the
CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT files.
d. Clean boot the system.

Re: CD Rom Failure?
Since you've isolated and the cause is not the CDROM, try these:
1. Swap the IDE cable. OR swap the cable on the motherboard.
2. Assuming you're using Win98, can you try booting in from a diskette, then select CDROM support. You'll be in DOS mode so pop in a CD and try accessing.
3. Last resort is to reinstall Win98. You should backup your registry. (*.dat files in your c:windows directory.. eg. copy *.dat *.da1)
