Caldera Linux and DNS

Hi,
I've just today started using Caldera Linux, after switcthing from RedHat. RedHat would not recognize my ethernet cards and Caldera does a fine job of it. However, I need to set up DNS and I selected all packages for installation. The problem is that Caldera doesn't seem to have a lot of the "named" files I need, and RedHat did. The how-to'I access in the "help" files reference /etc/named and var/named.conf, but they didn't seem to be present anywhere. Where can I find these? Can I import these from RedHat? Also, how do I select that I want a DHCP address assigned? What's a good reference "book" for Caldera? Normally, I'd just fight this thing through, but time is critical for me. Thanx to anyone who can help!

Re: Caldera Linux and DNS

Paul,

Although I'm not a Caldera Expert, I'll give this a try.

Most systems are built DNS aware by editing the /etc/resolv.conf file. You'll need the following info:

domain
or
search
nameserver

That will allow you to use DNS to get more comfortable with DNS.

You should also check out the file /etc/nsswitch.conf, make sure that the word dns is next to the hosts entry.

Hope that helps, please let me know if you need further information.

The easiest way is to start X. Then run 'control-panel'. Then configure DNS and DHCP from network icon.

Hope that will help.

Re: Caldera Linux and DNS

The reason that I atempted to explain the Non-GUI update is that I didn't want to assume that this Linux OS was configure to use X Windows. Even though there is some great tools that integrate with linuxconf (Mandrake has DrakConf), you should still have some understanding of what is being modified in the configuration files.

Hope that helps.
