Can Oracle Release 3 (8.1.7) for HP 9000 Series HP-UX (64-bit) be installed on a HP-UX(32-bit)?
I got the exact the same error described in the previous message(http://forums.itrc.hp.com/cm/QuestionAnswer/1,,0xced4cdec06f1d61190050090279cd0f9,00.html):
I get the following error:"Error in invoking target install of makefile /opt/oracle/product/8.1.7/rdbms/lib/ins_rdbms.mk"

Hi Larry,

You can't install Oracle 8.1.7 on 32-bit HP-UX because 8.1.7 is 64-bit.

There also exist a a 32 bit version of Oracle 8.1.7.3 that can be installed on a 32 bits server. The 64bits version won't work on 32 bits hardware.

you can install this oracle for 32 bit if it for only 64 bit .

you need to get the rigth cd for this install .

you will not have a problem ( most of the time ) to install a 32 bit applic on 64 bit but not in reverse .

The more general answer to the question is that 64-bit anything can not be installed on 32-bit HP-UX but 32-bit anything (well almost, kernel intensive stuff excepted) can be run under 64-bit HP-UX.

You need to get a copy of the 32-bit Oracle executables.

You would contact Oracle support to get media updates if you have support. Otherwise you can buy it online through the "store" at oracle.com
