Capacity planning tools

Capacity planning tools

We presently use BMC's Patrol (formerly called "Best/1") to do capacity planning and model building for HP-UX, Windows NT, and Sun platforms. We are looking at replacing this software as it is simply too expensive if you are using it on a lot of servers. It also takes a small army of people to care for it and to support it. What other capacity planning tools are available at lower cost to support model building for HP-UX?

Re: Capacity planning tools

HP Openview and the associated products (particularly Glance and Measureware) are excellent products for monitoring and capaciy planning.

The name has since changed to VantagePoint, but there is a capacity planning component of the suite of products.

Try www.openview.com.

Re: Capacity planning tools

Mott,

The few things that no software package can give you is knowledge about how the business is performing and where it is going.

As a capacity planner, you must be aware of the business trends, growth, new software requirements, and changes in business rules.

Some questions that must have answers:

Will we be processing more data and at what percentage?

How long must the data be retained online?

How fast is our customer base growing?

How fast is our internal users growing? (more users = more resource use)

We use glance/measureware and perfview, to measure and report on current usage, which allows use to see trends, but again, it doesn't let us see new business requirements, which we supplement by being involved in all projects. It really is a guessing game, but when you can control the rules, you can control the game.

Re: Capacity planning tools

We are looking for a tool that does reporting (i.e. posting performance graphs to the web) as well as allowing us to build queueing theory models of our workloads. Does Measureware or Vantagepoint allow you to build queueing models of your hosts? ALso, I was under the impression that they were rather expensive if you wanted an agency wide license - we are looking for lower cost solutions in an era where our upper management is looking closely as how every dollar is spent.
